Locked In Escape Rooms - The Wizard's Lair Review (Melbourne)

Hi all

In February 2023, my usual team of 4 took a kid-free trip down to Melbourne over a long weekend. We managed to fit in a bunch of escape rooms, as well as some lunches and dinners are some nice restaurants.

First up on our Melb weekend away was Locked In Escape Rooms.  They are located along the Mornington Peninsula in Mornington, a little under an hour’s drive south of Melbourne.

Before heading down on our trip, I had reached out to Carolyn, the owner of Locked In.  She kindly gave us local restaurant recommendations and gave us the low down on the best beaches to check out for a quintessential Mornington beach hut photo.

The first room we played at Locked In was The Wizard’s Lair. It was our 217th room to date.  The summary of the room is as follows:

Sent on a quest by your Wizard master, you and your fellow apprentices find yourselves chained to the walls of the Evil Wizard’s lair. You’ll need to use all of your wits and magic to escape before he returns, and curses you all!

Here is what I thought of The Wizard’s Lair:

·         the room was a lot of fun. We started the experience tethered to the wall and it took us WAY too long to figure out how to become untethered.  As always, our weakness is failing to see what is right in front of us;

·         the theming was really nicely done. I would describe this room as one that is really suited to families and children (I know my 11yo daughter and her friends would absolutely love this room).  That’s not to say that we adults didn’t have fun (which we absolutely did), but the room has clearly been designed so that younger players can join in and even take a lead role;

·         there was a nice mix of hunt and seek fun as well as a great variety of puzzles, which we all enjoyed; and

·         the props were all well considered throughout the experience.  There is a lot of tech in The Wizard’s Lair, which is also well-concealed and suits the magic theme of the room really well.

Our first room on our weekend away in Melbourne was a fun one.  We were able to play the part of apprentice wizards for the afternoon.  We were successful in our quest and had lots of fun along the way!  I think this room is particularly suited to newer players and would be perfect for families (or kid birthday parties).
