Mysterious Room - The Mystery of the Mayan Temple Review (Live Avatar)

Hi all

In January 2021, I played The Mystery of the Mayan Temple, which is a live avatar online room designed by Mysterious Rooms in Poland.  I played with 3 other escape room enthusiasts friends of mine.

Mayan Temple was my 165th room to date.  The theme of the room is as follows:

A well-known archaeology professor leaves the country in a hurry in order to deal with his private matters.  In his university office he leaves some clues you will need t solve a mystery he was working on for some months now.  It is connected with a golden figurine, which was stolen from a temple located deep down in an Amazon jungle many years ago.  It needs to return to its original place.  Help complete his mission!

Here’s what I thought about Mayan Temple:

  • the theming was really strong.  All of the props and puzzle elements made sense in the space.  Certain areas of the experience were movie-set quality theming, which was really impressive.  And who doesn’t love an Indiana Jones-inspired escape room?  Indiana Jones has to be one of the best trilogies of all time! (yes, I know what I said – I don’t recognise any Indiana Jones film that includes aliens….);
  • our live avatar was excellent.  The right level of humour and helpfulness – she really made the experience was it was.  Unique in this experience is that rather than wearing a body-cam, there is a separate cameraman filming our live avatar.  This made for a much more professional feel to the experience;
  • the puzzles in Mayan Temple were really strong.  There was a nice mix of puzzles of varying difficulty levels.  I remember feeling like there were a good number of puzzles to fill out the 1 hour experience (I’m not entirely sure how long it took us to escape, but my vague memory is that it was around the 40-50 minute mark);
  • all of the puzzles made sense and were satisfying once solved.  The room is non-linear so we were able to work on different puzzles in the order that we chose.  There were also some physical puzzles that we needed to solve – these normally don’t work well over zoom but we enjoyed having our live avatar act as our, well, avatar; and
  • the game flow worked well and we all agreed it was a really fun room.

I think Mayan Temple is one of the better live avatar rooms available.  I think it would be pretty tricky for newer players (although no doubt the live avatar could push you in the right direction when required).  The room is also family-friendly.
