District 3 Escape Rooms - Something Brewing Review (Live Avatar)

Hi all

In April 2021, I played an online escape room with other escape room enthusiast friends of mine from Australia and New Zealand.  The room was called Something Brewing from District 3 Escape Rooms who are based in Regina, Canada.

Something Brewing was my 167th room to date.  The theme of the room is as follows:

You and your friends head to a coffeehouse before the celebration. You soon find out that something is brewing, and your evening takes a turn for the worse. What crucial decisions will your team need to make, and what major outcome will that lead to?

Here’s what we thought about Something Brewing:

  • we had a really fun time playing Something  Brewing.  The room begins in a coffee shop, where players need to solve some puzzles and then uncover what’s really going on behind closed doors;
  • there are some nice puzzles in Something Brewing.  I don’t recall any puzzles being particularly stand out or incredibly unique, other than one that required players to really think about the space (which is hard to go into without giving spoilers).  We all enjoyed the puzzles, which I would describe as being more at the easier end of the spectrum (although that being said, we only escaped with a minute or two to spare);
  • our host and live-avatar was really good at his job and really lifted the experience;
  • one cool element of the game is that players are faced at one point with making a decision (which does impact the remainder of the game).  I have seen this in a few escape rooms now, but it was well-executed in Something Brewing; and
  • the theming was all pretty solid throughout the experience as well.

Our team enjoyed the experience.  We also had a long chat with the game master after our escape, which is always fun.  Whilst the theme of Something Brewing does not exactly appeal to younger audiences, it is certainly a family-friendly room (so there would be no issues with having younger family members join in on the fun).
