Sydney's latest escape room outfit - Break the Code+
Hi everyone
I have learned (from Andi, a reader of this blog) about a new escape room that has opened up in Sydney recently.
The outfit is called Break the Code Plus. They are located on George Street in Haymarket.
They opened on August 22. They currently have 6 rooms, as summarised below. Their website mentions that they plan to change up their rooms "every few months", which is something that other escape room outfits don't currently offer in Sydney.
They also describe themselves as having bigger rooms and better codes than their competition. They also suggest that their rooms are full of high tech puzzles.
Julia at Break the Code Plus sent me a short email telling me how the owners are avid escape room junkies and thought they would try their hand at opening up their own rooms in Sydney. I hope to check them out shortly and will of course post a review!
If anyone has tried out any of their rooms (or does so in the future), please either send me an email to escaperoomsydney@gmail.com or post a comment below to let me know what you thought about their rooms (particularly compared to other escape room outfits in Sydney).
To find out more or to make a booking, click here to go to their website.
Thanks
Scott

New TV show about Escape Rooms!
Hi everyone
I month or two ago, a friend of mine (who is a member of my 4 person escape room team) told me about a new show that had started in the USA on the Science Channel called Race to Escape.
A reader on my blog recently asked me if I knew about the show, which made me think that I should write a post on here about it so that other avid escape room lovers could check it out (thanks Alistair!).
The premise of the show is that a team of 3 strangers are blindfolded and placed in a room. Nearby, another team of 3 strangers are blindfolded and placed in an identical room. The teams then need to solve a series of puzzles to escape their room (for a cash prize) before their opponent team beats them.
It is an incredibly addictive show. Given that it is on the Science Channel, they provide commentary on errors made by teams with a scientific/sociological bent, which I find fascinating. It's really interesting to see how strangers work together - who becomes dominant (often the loud, more aggressive personality type), who walks around stressing the whole time and not really adding any value at all, the self-professed "smartest person in the room" who often is as thick as two bricks, etc.
It's a compelling 60 minute show. Anyone who likes escape rooms will love it.
The website for the show is here.
Thanks

Review of NoWayOut / One Way Out - The Body Shop theme
*** Note: This outfit has now changed its name to One Way Out***
My group of friends (4 adults) checked out No Way Out’s “The Body Shop” room in September 2015. This was our seventeenth escape room in Sydney so far (and we have now tried at least one room at every escape room outfit in Sydney).
We had previously booked in to try out this room about a month ago. However, the owner (Mike) has had a lot of
problems with the tech in this room (raspberry pi system has been plagued with stability
issues) and they have had some bad luck (power outages, escapees accidentally
breaking items, etc), so we had to reschedule.
I can confirm though that we didn’t have any technical issues at all and
I understand from Mike that about 100 groups have now gone through the room in
the past couple of weeks without any technical issues. So it seems that everything is back on track.
Having been there before, we found the place very easily. But the first time it was a little tricky to
find (primarily because they do not have any external signage at the
moment). The entrance is via a small car
park off of Denison Street – look for the large metal green door.
They currently have just the one room, but Mike has plans to open up a
second room (or possibly a consolidated special 2 hour experience room (or series of rooms), which would make it the longest experience available in Sydney).
First off, I'll say what I enjoyed most about The Body Shop at NoWayOut:
- it was a lot of fun.
The room design is simple but clever – there is a good mix of high and low
tech puzzles;
- every puzzle worked properly
– we had no issues with ambiguous or unclear puzzles;
- some of the puzzles were
really creative and different to what we had seen elsewhere;
- the theming was very good -
the props all made sense, many of which were bespoke/home-made (which I always
really appreciate);
- there was a lot of attention
to detail in the design of the props and the puzzles – the puzzles were
all challenging but not impossible.
My team managed to escape in about 46 minutes (of the permitted 60
minutes) and we only asked for one clue;
- the use of a walkie talkie for
communicating and obtaining clues was simple but effective; and
- the owner is passionate
about his business. Mike also took
the time after our escape to run through each of the puzzles, which is something
that not all escape room outfits do.
As for some of the improvements that could be made to The Body Shop:
- as I discussed with Mike, I
think every escape room needs a countdown clock on the wall. This really helps with the suspense and
it gets the adrenalin going. Mike’s
current system involves him giving the players (via the walkie talkie) a time
reminder every 15 minutes. This is
completely adequate, but for a fully immersive experience, there should be
a clock in the room;
- I think some more background
information on the theme and setting would be good (as you are about to go
into the room) – this would help to make this a more immersive experience;
- there were a couple of
puzzles that had been excluded from the game due to technical
problems. I understand that these
will be reinstated in the future – it was a shame that we didn’t get to
try these puzzles though (as they both looked high tech);
- due to the design of some of
the puzzles, it was possible to “break” your way through to the solution
(eg trial and elimination, etc). My
personal opinion is that the best designed puzzles are not capable of being broken;
- I think this room could do
with an extra couple of puzzles – with 4 people, we escaped in about 75%
of the allowed time, so I think the room needs a couple of extra puzzles
to fill out the full 60 minutes (although I appreciate newb teams would
not agree). The extra couple of
high tech puzzles would have further improved our experience I think; and
- they have had a Scoopon
campaign with great opening specials (50% off), but I think their standard
pricing going forward is high (and certainly more expensive than their
competitors).
Over all, I think this is a really good room. With a few tweaks and a couple of extra
puzzles, I think it has the potential to be an excellent room.
Where:
Suite 3/57 Denison Street,
Camperdown
Duration: 60 minutes
Themes: 1 theme (so far)
Cost: $50 to $60 each (4 players) (although 50% opening special)

Review of Room Escape (Escape Club) - Prison Break theme (SPOILER ALERT)
My group of friends (4 adults) checked out Room Escape Sydney
(also known as “Escape Club”) in August 2015.
This was our first time here. We
tried their Prison Break room, which was our 16th room in Sydney so
far. I had been putting off trying any of their rooms due to the dismal reviews that I had read on TripAdvisor and Facebook, but I figured I should see
it for myself….
When you book online, you pay a $30 non-refundable deposit. You then pay the room fee on arrival and
provided you don’t damage their room, the $30 is refunded at the end of
your escape.
We found the place pretty easily and managed to get street parking right in front of the place on the main street (Gardeners Road). There was nobody in reception when we arrived, so I gave them a call and they then came down the stairs, took our money and walked us up the stairs through an old, run down building to the end of a hallway. They then asked us to read the note on the wall, which explained the back story (in broken English). This was all what I was expecting, as 90% of TripAdvisor comments had commented on this aspect. We then were let into the room and told that we had 60 minutes to escape.
Now faithful readers, you have probably noticed that I do not generally include spoilers in my reviews. However, I was so utterly disappointed with this room, that I want to do all that I can to prevent others from wasting their money on this place. And to properly convey the reasons why I so disliked this room, I need to go into the detail of the puzzles and theme. So...
***SPOILER ALERT - IF YOU READ ON, YOU WILL READ SPOILERS***
(You have been warned!)
As we walked into our room, we could hear a smoke alarm beeping. The batteries needed replacing. It made me recall a TripAdvisor review of this place from almost a year ago when someone else commented that they could hear a smoke alarm beeping. Clearly these guys don't care about safety, which I will come to further shortly...
We were taken into the room and locked into a poorly constructed jail cell against the far wall. I'm not a chippy (in fact I am pretty hopeless with that kind of thing), but I could have build a better jail cell wall than what was on offer at this place. Anyway, I'm probably just being picky on that point - the bars served their purpose.
The quality of the puzzles and other items in the room was very poor. The theming was also pretty poor (there were various items in the room that didn't make sense at all). They were also too cheap to include a count down clock - we were instead left to set our own clock on our phone. This is the only room I can think of that didn't have a countdown clock of some description (whether the typical red clock on the wall, on an iPad, etc). It was cheap.
We found a torch and the batteries did not work at all. They were dead. I think they were the same batteries that a group used 6 months before us (because they also commented that the batteries didn't work at all). That wasn't the end of the world (as we tried this room in the afternoon and had a reasonable amount of light coming in through the windows). It was just annoying and a sign of a poorly managed room.
The owners have no system to allow you to communicate. Instead, they require you to get out your mobile phone and call them on their land line. This again is poorly managed. As far as we could see, there were no cameras in the room so the owners had no clue what we were doing in the room. Apart from the fact that this is just laziness on their part (and poor management), it's also not safe. Others on TripAdvisor had commented on how unsafe and dangerous this place is. On reading those reviews, I honestly thought that the reviewers were being a little over the top. They weren't - this place is incredibly unsafe. All of their electronic puzzles have exposed wires running all over the place. You reach in to feel around within a dark cupboard and you can feel so many exposed live wires, which really is dangerous. Apart from the smoke alarm thing, others have complained that they were unable to escape the room and had to knock for up to 30 minutes before the owners came into the room to release them. This place is a WH&S nightmare!
Over all, the puzzles were clunky and unclear. It seemed to us that some of the puzzles were laid out in the wrong order (as we seemed to complete them in an illogical order). The clues on the walls were unclear. The quality of the locks and mechanisms was also poor. You could see that they had a few decent ideas (although by no means novel compared to their competitors), but their execution was lazy and cheap.
My biggest annoyance of all was one particular puzzle which required you to find and assemble a cross-bow and use it to shoot arrows. You had to shoot an arrow at a particular target a few metres away and if you hit it, the target will fall over and reveal a code that you need to progress in the room. We initially found a bow and the arrows, so I had a few goes trying to hit the target (without realising that if I had waited to find another piece of the cross-bow, my accuracy would have greatly improved). The cross-bow was hand-made and was very inaccurate - it took several goes at getting the parts to stay still without slipping. What annoyed me was that we shot the 3 arrows and of course missed the target, but we COULDN'T RETRIEVE THE ARROWS!! I called using one of our hints and they said you get three tries and that's it. This is a fatal error in this room. I have never before been in an escape room where you can break the game and then leave yourself high and dry. When I was on the phone asking for a hint and the owner/manager told me that you only get 3 attempts, I had a go at him. He told me that when others miss with all 3 arrows, they have to phone and are simply given the code over the phone. I said that this wasn't good enough, so he begrudgingly came in the room and picked up the arrows and passed them to us. This of course ruined the flow of the game (not that it was overly immersive in any way), but better that than the alternative of being told the code over the phone. Luckily we managed to hit the target with those 3 arrows on our second attempt, but the idea that you only get 3 goes is utter garbage.
The remainder of puzzles didn't make a great deal of sense. They were very loose and clunky.
We escaped this room in 43 minutes and I can honestly say that of the 4 of us, none of us enjoyed any aspect of this room. They also had a small box that was an "additional puzzle" that we weren't required to solve in order to escape the room. We spent the next 17 minutes trying to figure out this puzzle and were ultimately unsuccessful. When the owners told us the solution, I think I audibly sighed - not because it was clever, but because (much like the rest of the room) it was just shite.
This place doesn't care about safety, room design, theming or professionalism. They have some reasonably good ideas that are executed very poorly and this room in particular has an inexcusable flaw.
We won't be back here (in fact, I wish I hadn't wasted my money on this place). I sincerely hope that others are put off going to this place by this blog - the thought of which makes me feel a little better about wasting our time there.
I love good escape rooms - the more the merrier as far as I am concerned. However, crappy escape rooms don't deserve your patronage. There are so many better escape rooms in Sydney to try than this poor excuse of an escape room. In fact, all 15 other rooms I have tried in Sydney were considerably better than this room!

Sydney's newest escape room outfit opening August - Labyrinth Escape Rooms, Parramatta
Hi everyone
I've just learned that an eleventh escape room outfit is about to open its doors in Sydney. This outfit is called Labyrinth Escape Rooms and will be based in Parramatta.
They hope to open in August. They will have 2 rooms to begin with, as follows:
Mad Scientist:
A crazed scientist is on the run! As watchmen track his path, you and
your team are to go back to his lab to find his secret chemical concoction.
Nothing’s for certain; but we’re told this liquid substance has the
power to rewind human ageing – for good! The clock is ticking to outsmart the
mad scientist before it’s too late!
Insane Asylum:
Rumour has it that there was man who miraculously broke
free from his locked cell years ago, never to be seen again. On the cusp of the
seventieth year since the man broke free, strange things have been happening
inside the hospital’s walls. Doctors have called in your team of medical
experts in a desperate plea to solve the mystery case of the missing patient.
I will check out Labyrinth Escape Rooms soon after they open and will report back here with a review!
