Hi all
One of my absolute favourite rooms of all time was a room that we played in Barcelona during our November-December 2024 trip to Athens and Spain. The room is a previous #5 TERPECA room and is currently #9 at the time of (finally) writing up this review in January 2026.
The story behind La Taberna is as follows:
Come to the Tavern and experience an adventure like no other! Neil Parker comes from a long line of wealth and power, but little is known about his family's origins. The tyrant's totalitarian regime is very careful with the few details that are revealed about his ancestors: great battles, great honor, and a few betrayals…
Rumors, lacking any real basis, claim they were part of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy, and other stories trace their lineage back to Genghis Khan himself. But the truth is quite different. The Parker family's origins were humble, and like many stories worth telling, it began in a Tavern.
Delve into the story of Neil Ferdinand, the true ancestor of the City's tyrant, to discover what began 400 years ago and still lives on in the Tavern of The City Escape Room Barcelona.
Taberna was our 368th room to date. Here is what I thought:
- the theming in La Taberna is possibly the best theming I have seen in any room in the world. La Taberna is an unassuming escape room in a business park in Terrassa, about an hour’s drive from Barcelona. But you really need to see what they have done to believe that it’s possible.
- the scale of La Taberna is also off the charts. There are so many different areas to traverse, each very different but incredibly impressive.
- the puzzles throughout the experience were challenging and incredibly varied. They ranged from character interactions, to dexterity puzzles, communications puzzles, hunt and seek fun, etc. They also ranged from pretty straight forward to quite challenging for our team of 3.
- one of the highlights for me in La Taberna were the many character interactions that we were able to enjoy. As always, I consider it my personal mission to make actors break character at some point throughout the experience. I am pleased to report that at one point, a character half yelled and half laughed while calling me “a little shit”. Victory was mine!
- the ending of La Taberna was really visually impressive. The only slight shame was that we couldn’t easily understand what was being said, in part due to sound issues and in part due to the accents of the actors. This did not however detract much at all from our overall enjoyment of the experience.
La Taberna was a phenomenal room. I loved that it began as an unassuming small space which then opened up to what was I think the most impressive set I have seen in any escape room in the world. It was a level beyond anything I had seen before or since. This room was so much fun and easily worth the trip from Sydney to Barcelona alone. At the time of writing up this review over a year later, and having played many phenomenal rooms in the interim, La Taberna remains in my top 3 rooms of all time.
