SCRAP Japan - Escape from the Science Lab of Shifting Rules (Live Avatar)

Hi all

In June 2021, some other escape room enthusiast friends and I played a magical room by SCRAP in Japan called “Escape from the Science Lab of Shifting Rules” (EFTSLOSR).  The room is a live avatar experience.  Spoiler alert – this was my absolute favourite online room to date (at the time of writing this review).

EFTSLOSR was my 191^st escape room experience.  The theme of the room is as follows:

Earth is suddenly in danger! Use the “Rule Change Machine” and escape from the science lab!

Here’s what I thought about EFTSLOSR:

·         this is a crazy, magical, at times hilarious and truly unique room that is beyond clever.  I think the reason that it is my favourite online room to date is because of just how unique it was;

·         the room reminded me of a crazy Japanese game show at times- parts were objectively silly (yet hilarious) but really cleverly-designed into the overall room theme and puzzle flow;

·         it is really difficult to give too much away about the puzzles without giving spoilers, but the room is based on a magical “Rule Change Machine” which requires players to input word sentences into the machine (eg “everything red is green”) which then has real-world effects in the room (ie any items that are red are magically green).  It’s incredibly low tech (with our avatar being “amazed” at the red items become green before their eyes (again, in that Japanese game show style);

·         although many aspects of the puzzles were ludicrous, the puzzle design itself was truly genius.  With limited words available to enter into the Rule Changing Machine, players are required to get creative with how to solve puzzles.  We were stuck a number of times but eventually figured out what was required;

·         we escaped with only a few minutes to spare (the ending was utterly perfect for the room theme).  I would therefore describe this room as a challenging room (better suited to experienced players); and

·         our game master and live avatar was excellent.  She played her role brilliantly (both as an actor and as clue-provider).

 

EFTSLOSR is the most unique room I have played to date.  It is such a crazy, hilarious, challenging and engaging room.  I enjoyed every minute and I think the whole team agreed it was a fun and truly unique experience.
