Break the Code Plus - Groupon deal on now

Hey all

A week or two ago I posted about a new escape room outfit that had opened up recently at Haymarket, called Break the Code Plus.

I contacted the owner recently who told me that they would be doing a Groupon campaign this month and true to their word, they are (thanks Kiara and Andi for forwarding me the link to the Groupon campaign!).

The deal is a good one too - around $20 per head (which equates to around 50% off).

You'll have to be quick though, as the Groupon runs out this Sunday night!  Any unlike many other Groupon campaigns, the vouchers are good through til 31 January 2016 (which is really generous).

Thanks
Scott

  2. I did the Avatar room yesterday & aesthetically it was a nice room but felt it needed more puzzles/depth. There were a couple of mishaps too – A wall button fell off & a door locked behind us unintentionally & we were actually trapped (Door release button didn’t work!). They state x8 people can do the room, which we did with 7 & I would strongly recommend 4-5 max. I found this quite frustrating to begin with because it was far too cosy. ERs need to think about the experience not bottom line. It was probably not helped I’d just done Labyrinth out in Parramatta (Excellent!) & was somewhat tired & hungry!
I enjoyed it enough to buy x3 more Groupon vouchers, which you can’t really complain with at that price 

    1. I definitely agree. We did the Avatar room as well and I was quite disappointed; there were 'lights that weren't broken', and one part that was crucial to continue was not working at all. After banging our head against it for ages we called for help and they reset the room...and it still wasn't working. Problem with using tech, sometimes it screws up, and if you aren't monitoring, you can't tell when people are having trouble on something they aren't supposed to be having trouble on.

Someone else on this blog mentioned that the first puzzle was too hard; perhaps because too many people had mentioned this, they actually started off by giving a 'hint' that turned out to be a massive 'first you do this puzzle then you do this one then...' for the first four parts or so, which I felt was a little odd.

More and more varied puzzles would have been useful. We did this with four and I definitely think it would be overcrowded (not in terms of space, there was some space, but in terms of things to do) with seven or eight. However, staff were very nice.

    2. Uh, sorry, lights that weren't working. Changed 'working' to 'broken' and forgot to modify the sentence, haha. But yeah, there were some small lights that weren't working and that threw us off even though we were told upon entering the room. :( I think I'm also not a fan of the lighting in general, though that's starting to get nitpicky...anyway.

  3. Did Indiana jones and I didn't mind it,there escape rooms are unique and it did live up to its name. We did have to ask for a lot if hints though but it's still another I wouldn't have completed without help! I find them difficult though and not for beginners

  4. They have introduced Walkie talkies by the way so they have listened to feedback

  5. I have now completed Avatar, Lost & recently Indiana Jones, which is definitely my favourite room. It had a couple of cool features but like all their rooms it suffers from the same problems…lack of depth & number of puzzles, torches not working, buttons falling off/not working but my biggest gripe… At the beginning of Indiana & particularly Lost they fully explained what we had to do & how to do it! This should never be required in an ER…Just illustrates poor planning & detracts from the experience.

You should come out of a decent escape room feeling elated & buzzing. Replaying all the moments with one another but when I came out of Avatar, I was actually relieved…Lost was fairly similar, while Indiana was a bit better.

While, on Saturday I did Para Park & absolutely loved it! One of the finest in Sydney. A welcome relief!

  6. We waiting two weeks in the hopes that they improved and did Mission Stealth but came out less than impressed (again). Like Rojo said, they do have walkie talkies but both times we called for them, it took them 5 minutes to respond. Torch ran out of battery, and one of the puzzles just didn't seem right at all and they couldn't even show us the solution. I still have one more voucher and I almost dread going back. :(

  7. I'm exactly the same. I have one remaining voucher but less than enthused by the prospect.
All these issues are just sloppy management imo but at least they have listened & adopted walkie talkies. Hopefully they can get their act together because they have promise.

  8. Did you both get out of escape rooms on time?

  9. Avatar we failed but partly because of a lot of mishaps. Quite literally locked in a room & too many people meant we missed a UV torch.
Lost we got out in time and the same with Indiana. Both of these we slightly cheated on a couple of puzzles and so again illustrates some flaws with their designs

  10. Hi Andy and Rojo

I'm hoping to try out 2 of their rooms this weekend so I'll post reviews shortly. I'm not filled with too much confidence based on your comments. What's worse is that my company is doing a corporate afternoon at Break the Code in a month or so and I'm going to be really annoyed if they have problems with their puzzles/torches etc for that event.

I'll wait and see how I go this weekend - if they have problems, I will raise them with the owners direct. If I owned an escape room, I would definitely appreciate being told (and I would fix them).

    Thanks
    Scott

  11. I'll be interested to hear your comments. I would recommend definitely recommend Indiana as the best of their rooms & try not to overload the rooms, if possible.
I think for new people they will still have fun (My friend really enjoyed Lost) but for more avid ER devotees you will probably be left unethused.

Better still, change venue ;) I've got management attending Dr M @ Mission Sydney soon. I cannot wait to hear their feedback, especially after being handcuffed/blindfolded :)

I have provided them with four separate feedbacks, all pretty extensive and I've heard nothing back *sigh*

  12. It's really disappointing when you try and help out an escape room outfit and they don't care about the feedback (or don't bother to respond). I've already locked in to do their rooms with my company, so there's no going back. If I don't have a great experience this weekend, I will be talking to the owners to fix their problems before my company goes there.

  14. Andy when u slightly chested in Indiana I think I know which part :p

  15. I find that there are different kinds of "hard" as well. Hard because I never thought a puzzle could be a certain way or I hadn't thought something through, that's ok. But if it's hard because the gamemaster is trying to "waste" my time with a lengthy puzzle without much fun to it or one requiring a special physical or knowledge skill set, that's disappointing.

  16. i been to 2 rooms from breakthecode - da vinci... got stuck and ask for help even the game master cant even open(ruin the good part) and for indiana jones i accidentally force a door to open with some momentum by passing lock box(which i didnt know i did). would rate this place 6.5/10 for interesting mechanism.
